When Raj and Jolene purchased Liberty Farm in 2005, it was more than a fulfillment of a long held dream. Their dedication to creating both a sustainable farming operation which implemented sound agricultural practices AND a sustainable agricultural business which brings new products to the market has become their passion and will continue to bring them success on both fronts.
Having come to farming from a successful business background, the couple has invested themselves in developing their agricultural skills. through seeking out Ag educational opportunities, participation in Ag Leadership Development, participation in Rutgers Extension educational opportunities and as active members of the Sussex County Board of Ag. Their investment of time, thought and talent coupled with a balanced business approach is a certain formula for continued success and a great model for today's young farmer-tomorrow's industry leader.

The Liberty Farm label was launched with a product new to most palates- Garlic Jelly.
Liberty Farm plants, harvests and sells many varieties of garlic-all excellent for cooking and recipes. But Liberty Farm took the product one step further. After a some innovative experimentation-and a lot of sampling-the couple hit on a recipe for garlic jelly that is just perfect with pretzels, Brie, cream cheese or prepared as a glaze for roasted meats.
Once they had the perfect recipe in place the challenge became processing the product to meet the requirements for retail sale-specifically, acquiring the food handler certifications and finding the proper facilities needed for preparing the product in a certified kitchen. Fortunately, through the cooperative efforts of Rutgers Extension Service and the county, both elements were able to be addressed. A pilot program-open to all Sussex County Farmers- was underway. The program offered food handler courses and through cooperation of Sussex Technical School, certified facilities were made available for use. Liberty Farm and several other Sussex County farmers registered for the course, received their certifications and are now extending the availability of Sussex County's bounty through value added products produced right here at "home".

As Liberty Farm is now able to meet the ever growing demand for their Garlic Jelly other products have been added their label:Elderberry Jam and Salsa have recently been introduced and there are plans for further expansion as Raj evaluates how Liberty Farm can continue to fill specific market niches. Well thought out diversification of product and efficiently utilizing crops and products already in production at the farm is a great model for Value Added success and agricultural sustainability.

The Sussex County Board of Agriculture congratulates Raj and Jolene for their innovation, leadership and dedication to agriculture.
